The purpose of a keto diet is to induce ketosis in the body. It’s a metabolism system where the body uses its stored fat to generate energy. Our body has the mechanism to use carbohydrate for energy and as we start the keto diet, our body uses fat instead of glucose. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s messing up with your metabolism system.

Does the keto diet mess up your metabolism

Your body is used to using carbohydrate for energy. Cutting down carb all of a sudden might have an adverse effect on the body. Normally we consume around 225-335g carb each day. Keto diet strictly restricts the consumption to up to 35g a day.

If you alter the regular carb intake drastically then it’s normal to feel fatigued or tired. Keto diet has been there since 1920 and it’s been widely used to control epilepsy. It’s normal to feel tired at the beginning, however, these side-effects will wear off within a few days.

Along with the changes with the metabolism system, the keto diet also helps to control our blood sugar level and it has been found on multiple types of research that keto diet is helpful for people with type-2 diabetes.

As the diet consists of 70% fat, there’s a common misconception that it’s bad for our health. However, it’s important that you consume healthy fats and protein during a keto diet. You can add nuts, olive oil, fish fat, cheese, etc. in your diet regime. Try to avoid processed and packaged foods as they are unhealthy and put you in a higher risk of getting heart diseases.

Will It Change Back to Normal If I stop the Diet?

Being on a keto diet for the long term is not advised by doctors or nutritionists. Once you reach your desired weight range it’s better to put a stop and continue with your regular diet regime. However, your body is adapted to using fats for energy on a keto diet.

So, if you consume a large amount of carb all of a sudden then it’ll have a negative impact on your health. Try to introduce carb back into your system with low amounts so that you don’t drastically get back the extra weight that you shed. Taking carbs in low amount will help you sustain your weight goals and help you stay healthy as well.

Keto diet is an excellent way to shed the extra weight off the body while staying healthy and fit. It does change our regular diet regime and induce ketosis, however, it doesn’t mess up with the metabolism system if done correctly. Make sure you consult with a registered doctor before you proceed with the diet regime to ensure that it’s suitable for you.
